Ah, 2014. What a year it was for weddings! Between all the fantastic celeb weddings, gorgeous new trends, and even more unique wedding ideas, it’s been quite the whirlwind! I must admit, I’m a little sad to see such a great year for weddings go, but I’m also incredibly excited for 2015. Who knows what new and unique wedding goodies the new year holds؟
As the year comes to close, I always like to do a little look back and highlight some of my favorite (and not so favorite) wedding trends from the past year. So without further delay, here it is: Wedding Party’sbest & worst wedding trends of 2014!
BEST WEDDING TRENDS:
Bridal Separates:
I can’t even begin to say how much I love this trend. Perfect for the bride looking for something a little different but still gorgeous, brides in bridal separates for their wedding day look is a trend I’d love to see continue in 2015. Call it the Olivia Palmero effect, if you will!
Cool DIY bars for your reception:
One of the ultimate ways to entertain your guests at your reception is with food — so why not take it a step further and get a little more creative? From mimosas to cupcakes to candy apples, brides and grooms got guests involved (and seriously delighted!) with cool DIY bar ideas.
Wifey T-shirt for the engaged lady:
Sexy, spunky and sweet all in one, this T-shirt is the perfect new wardrobe item for the newlywed. At just under $30, it’s the perfect gift for any new wifeys in your life!
Inclusive engagement selfies:
Gone are the days of a wedding being the bride’s show. Grooms are getting increasingly involved in planning and participating in the wedding day…starting with the moment it all happens: the proposal! We’ve loved seeing more and more newly engaged ladies include their beaming grooms in their engagement ring selfies, and hope to see even more in 2015!
Wedding rompers:
Okay fine — you can call me romper crazy. I just love this trend, and while it’s still early, I think it’s a really great idea for any bride getting married in 2015. Certainly having matching getting ready rompers for you and your bridesmaids is more unique than robes or monogrammed shirts!
Gorgeous flower crowns:
If I just had to name one trend that killed it in 2014, it would be flower crowns. In fact, I’m totally fine with calling this year the Year of the Flower Crown. Whether the crowns were small and dainty or large and abundant, brides in 2014 brought this boho and romantic bridal hairstyle into the limelight.
WORST WEDDING TRENDS:
While there were so many other great trends that I loved from 2014, I do have to admit, there’s always a few that just boggle my mind a bit. I’m all for trying everything at least once, but my fingers are crossed that these trends are laid to rest in 2015.
Wedding dresses with super low backs:
Okay, I know a lot of people love this trend. And I can see why! In it’s own way, these plunging and dramatic backless wedding dresses make quite the statement. But (and you can call me a prude if you must), they’re just…so…low. Whenever I see photos of a bride in a super low back wedding dress, I personally think she could have covered it up a bit more on her wedding day. And, I get worried about what will happen if she needs to bend over. But, that’s just me.

Radiant orchid wedding inspiration:
I loved Pantone’s color of the year in 2013 (more Emerald, please and thank you!), but when the color of the year for 2014 was announced, I was nonplussed. Radiant Orchid is…okay. Don’t get me wrong — I love weddings with rich plum or dusty lavender details. But something about the shade of radiant orchid doesn’t quite do it for me, at least when it comes to weddings.
Thank goodness the new color of the year is gorgeous enough to make up for this last year — Marsala weddings, here I come!
Increasingly expensive and extravagant weddings:
According to a recent survey by The Knot, the average cost of a wedding is now $30,000. Yes, that’s right — with that many zeroes. While I’m all for having a beautiful wedding, come on. That’s just TOO much. Here’s a few other things that cost right around $30k, just for some perspective:
- A year’s worth of college tuition at a public university in California
- A 10% down payment on a $300k property
- An Audi A3
So in conclusion. Eek. The rising average wedding cost is NOT a trend I’m loving.
TMI wedding photography poses:
Okay, maybe they’re kind of funny for like, a minute. The first time you see the photo. After everyone gets over it, you’ll be asking yourself: “why”? And when you show your wedding photos to your kids, they’ll probably think you’re crazy. Just don’t do it. It’s not classy.
